Mexican in Toronto?

The Armadillo Texas Grill is on Front Street almost right across the street from the SkyDome. It's been a while since I was there so I can't comment on the prices. Attire is definitely casual.

You may wish to consider posting your request for info on the tor.eats newsgroup.

If you're going to be in the east end of Toronto you may want to visit Dona y Miguel's in Ajax. It's on Westney Road just south of the 401. Food is fantastic. Prices for entrees are between $10 and $15 Cdn. usually.

Bob, Mexican food is not really Toronto's strong suit. If I were you, I'd be tempted to try Sri Lankan, or Korean, or Ethiopian or Eritrean or Somali: something that you might not find so easily in your own neck of the woods. Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if Syracuse has better Mexican food than Toronto.

Armadillo, Carlos & Pepe's, and Viva Zapata are basically Tex-Mex. Friendly, tasty, not overly authentic. Iguana tries to be a little more authentic, but I wouldn't say it was particularly outstanding.

There are a few new places that might be worth checking out. Cantina Arturo's on Adelaide downtown is fun and friendly, and has outstanding fresh salsas: nice salsa cruda, interesting chipotle salsa, fresh jalapeno salsa and a Habanero salsa that'll blow the top of your head off. Margarita's at Baldwin and McCaul has an interesting menu - they're trying to get away from the standard fajitas/tacos/burritos fare. They have a small patio, and the owner's fiercely proud of his restaurant. Good selection of beers, including Negra Modelo. Zocalo's is trying even harder for authenticity with mixed results. It's definitely worth trying, although last time I was there it was closed (perhaps they close on Monday's, as many places tend to do).

Kitty-corner to Zocalo's is Xango's, a new, upscale "South American" place. It's definitely more expensive than the others, but they have an interesting menu. Fantastic ceviches and other appetizers, and good seafood/fish entrees.

Another South American place is "La Cucina de Dona Luz" on St. Clair, somewhat north of downtown. This is a homey place with flavourful, spicy Peruvian food. The owner is almost absurdly proud of his kitchen - you've gotta love a guy who loves his work that much.

The ones that I've been to, Viva Zapata and Tortilla Flats are just aweful. And none of the restaurants is Mexican; they are all Tex-Mex.

The Mexican with the best reputation here is Margarita's. I once went there, but left after waiting 20 minutes for a waiter to acknowledge my existence.
