I don't know why, but I had as difficult a time convincing the good people here that it would be a useful group to have as I did convincing the net that alt.restaurants would be, 5 years ago, which of course became the group you are now reading. At any rate, what follows is a string of discociated text that is a sort of compilation of restaurants that have been suggested as worth visiting in Toronto. You can probably get a feed of tor.eats from your friendly neighborhood network service provider if you ask, and feel free to email me specific requests that I will pass on to the group. snip snip snip > >: Head over to the Armenian Kitchen on Victoria Park between Eglinton >: and Lawrence (west side). Pass an >Esso station and you've gone too far). Okay, now that we're out of Far Eastern Willowdale where the thread started, I'll add my $0.02 worth and put in a recommendation for a couple of places on Yonge Street: Chez Lauren, French cuisine, very good, not too expensive, good atmosphere. East side of Yonge a few blocks north of Sheppard. Enzo's Wood Oven Pizzeria, excellent pizza. You probably thought McBffieDee's 5-minute pizza was too quick, but actually it's too slow. The best pizza in the city takes about 90 seconds to bake in a _HOT_ wood-fired oven, right next to the fire. Inexpensive. Two doors north of Chez Lauren. >But Richard is right, after Mexico, finding the real thing in TO >is impossible. Iguana, on the west side of Avenue Road a little south of Wilson, is very good, and authentic I'm told. It's not beans and burritos -- more sophisticated than that. Some excellent fish cooked whole. Friendly, efficient service. Not cheap, but worth the money. You'll want to make reservations on weekends. >Does anyone know where is a good place to get inexpensive sushi in T.O.? S. of Bloor, 1 Block East of Yonge, on Balmuto St.: Japan Deli. Mondays sushi is $1 per order, A La Carte. People are friendly. try Chieng Mai if you're looking in the phone book (even though I think it's usually rendered as Chiang Mai) 112 Dundas W 416-599-8308. Yes, it's excellent. : A notch up is Golden Thai, Queen and Church. $80 for dinner, but : with basil. The dishes with tamarind are definitley an aquired taste, : one I havn't aquired. Our current favourite is Thai Rama, 1974 Queen E, 693-1688, reservations recommended for busy times. They don't take credit cards, they didn't have a booze licence last time I was there (a month ago) but were expecting 'any day now'. If it's important, call first. A huge dinner for three was $115 with tax and tip. The two of us have eaten there for $30-40. Try the basil beef, the green curries, and **** for the coconut-chicken soup. And for cheap Thai thrills, there's a steam-tables-style Thai cafeteria that takes pride in their food, Yonge at Hayden (just south of Bloor), where you can get an acceptable Pad Thai or Ginger Chicken with salad and drink, and get out for under $8. It's called Green Mango. For a great, cheap real Mexican meal, try a place on Carleton just west of Parlaiment (can't remember the name). It's fantastic. > With the huge influx of HKers, it seems that my favourite > Hunan and Sezchaun restaurants have disappeared. Any > recommendations out there? Is the Hunan Lion on Dundas > any good? > Try the Shanghai (Sezchaun) on Spadina just south of College. A friend took me to Peter's Chung King Restaurant, 281 College St.. A wonderful little place with cheap prices and great food. Let me know what you think... Hey I've tried that Bamboo Gardens Thai restuarant in Toronto. It serves excellent Thai food and what's great is that if you have a Toronto Lif discount card, you can get an entree for half price. The atmosphere is comfortable also. For quick Thai food, the Green Mango on Yonge is tasty and cheap. I love spicy, and this place knows how to make it good! : Does anyone know where is a good place to get inexpensive sushi in T.O.? Sushi Bistro on Queen: lunch specials in the $8-15 range, including soup & salad. >There is a floating sushi bar in Toronto called Tidal Wave and it's >located on Richmond near University Ave. They have an all-you-can-eat The Tidal Wave was on the corner of Richmond and Simcoe, just west of University ... I think it's closed now, but there may be another sushi place in its place. >Does anyone know where is a good place to get inexpensive sushi in T.O.? Isn't "inexpensive sushi" an oxymoron? There's a place called "Midori" on Yonge, just north of College on the west side. It's got ok prices. There is a little place on the south side of Bloor St, a couple of blocks east of Ossington, called Rikishi. It's quite nice, and I've had good experiences with their sushi--not overly exotic, but nice and fresh. I like the place, and like recommending it. Wendy Harrison [email removed] >I've recently seen ads for a Tibetan restaurant in Yorkville. >The problem is that I can't find the ads anymore so I don't know >the name of the restaurant or where it is. > >Further, anyone been there? Do tell... Been there... it's called the Little Tibetan, or something like that. South side of Yorkville St., west of Bay. Very friendly place... the dumplings are wonderful (we tried several varieties, all very good) and the tea is unique. A couple own and run the place. They told us they used to run a spot in Montreal for 15 years, and moved to Toronto 2 years ago. I remember they were very friendly and helpful in guiding us through their native foods. Hope this helps! Well, La Mexicana, at Carleton & Parlaiment, is cheap & great. I went there yesterday. Free chips & salsa. Lunch consisted of lentil soup, 2 burritos, beans, salad (more than enough) for $5.95. I was taken there by a Mexican woman, so she swears it's authentic Mexican style food. Let me know what you think of it. Fred's Not Here, on King st, best restaurant in the city.
