In 1992 I had the interesting experience of eating smoked
duck with a plastic knife and fork at a rib joint (and I do
mean joint) named Woody's. It was still the best meal I
had during a six-day visit to California.

Don't miss "La Super-Rica" -- a Sta Barbara favorite for excellent,
inexpensive Mexican food. Mostly take-out but they have some picnic
 table-type seating.

For a fancy meal with great views -- Citronelle at the Sta Barbara Inn.
Pretty reasonable at lunch -- right on the water.

And take a look through Zagat's LA/S CA ratings <http://www.zagat.com>
-- we've found them reliable. Both the above were "25" on food =
 excellent.

So -- takeout a Super-Rica burro to the Mission or botanical garden,
 and have a good trip!

The Far Western Tavern in Guadalupe (about 8 mi. due west of Santa
Maria). They feature Santa Maria style BBQ (beef BBQ'ed on oak) and
it's an old-west theme. The Hitching Post in Buelton (just East of
101 on the road to Solvang). The Wine Cask in downtown Santa Barbara.
 La Super-rica in Santa Barbara.

Haven't been to either, but foodie friends have also suggested:
Chef Rick's (Orcutt) and Cafe Chardonnay (Los Olivos). These rec's
are probably over a year old, though, so call ahead...
