Davis.

You might try the Crepe Bistro. It's only a few blocks off of the freeway. Take the Davis exit, which turns into E street in downtown Davis; the Bistro is on your right, just before you get to Third Street. It varies depending upon the cook (no doubt a starving UCD art student) working at the time, but the crepes range from good to excellent. The french onion soup is very tasty. The service is semi-self-serve, meaning you order at the counter, sit down, and they bring the food out to you. The owner is a German guy named Max who lived most of his life in Paris. A funky little place but one of my favorites.

For more upscale food, try Colette, on the corner of 2nd and G streets. Only been there once, but the food and service were both very good.

For excellent German-style beer and decent food, try Sudwerk. Take the Mace Boulevard exit, go back over the freeway, take your first left, and follow that frontage road around; Sudwerk will be on your right.

*hmm, I know a John Holland -- naaa!

Well, for both dinner, and breakfast (especially breakfast!)
try the Italian Cottage -- no that was the old name, now it's
Caffe Italia -- in Davis. It's right at the offramp (well, if
you're going east you have to go over the freeway, then look
to your left before the signal/underpass - it border I-80).

Warning -- this interchange is undergoing major renovations,
more signals, etc are probably going to surface. Anyway, it's
on the north side of I-80, across from the Shell place.

Their breakfasts are awsome! Your choice of cottage potatoes or
fresh cooked spinach, big omlets, good french toast, etc.

I've never eaten dinner, but I've been there a lot for lunch, and
the menu is pretty much the same... pasta, pizza, salads, other
Italian stuff such as Eggplant parme., etc. There lunch includes
meatball sandwiches, sub. type sandwiches, salads, pasta, pizza, etc.

Anyway, I think the breakfasts are the best, and it's pretty
reasonable. The Blue Mango (about 4th and G in Davis; you
come out at 1st and E when you exit the main Davis offramp) is
a vege. restaurant with pretty good breakfasts as well.
