If anyone knows of a good barbecue fix between downtown Oakland and Milpitas (where Quincy's RULES--greens, cobbler, corn muffins, the works), I'd sure like to hear about it. Goldie's in East Palo Alto has closed, from what I hear, as has Dimple's due to the tragic death of its owner. Sad times for Bay Area barbecue lovers.

What ever happened to Flint's

I had heard about it on ba.food last summer, so I searched it out. Location: Old South BBQ 16680 E.14th, San Leandro (NE corner of 167th and E.14th) mon-thru 11-9, fri-sat 11-10, sun 3-8 Details: It's in a little strip mall with ample parking. It is well lighted with 6-8 tables. Food is prepared in a kitchen in the back of the store so you don't get to watch the show ala Flint's. Staff is very friendly. It has the feel of a family operation. I ordered sliced beef and pork ribs (my standard Flint's fare). The portions are smaller than Flint's but the prices are lower ($8.50 for a two-way). You get two sides and a choice of bread (or cornbread). The pork ribs were small but very meaty. The were done to perfection and were very tender. Better than Flint's. The sliced beef is different than Flint's coarsely chopped beef. It is machine sliced normal deli thickness. But, unlike another well known East Bay BBQ, you could tell they actually BBQ'ed it themselves. Almost as good as Flint's (real close actually). Sauce(mild) - very good, very much like Flint's sauce in flavor. Unlike Flint's, this is a liquid sauce instead of the thicker sauce Flint's uses(used). Potato salad - more like mashed potatos with mayo and mustard. Very bland (tasteless actually). Won't order it again. Cole slaw - OK, will order it again. Cornbread - good, finally I won't have to feed the squirrels the the junky wheat bread that Flint's used to give me. The also have wheat bread for those that want it. Other: I didn't order any of these (except as above) but I'll point them out: beef or pork ribs, sliced beef, turkey, chicken, hot links, chilli sides: potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans desserts: sweet potato or pecan pie, peach cobbler, banana pudding, yellow or chocolate cake with chocolate icing. Analysis: They say everything there is homemade and I believe them. They've been around awhile at this location and at a previous location in Hayward. The poster from last summer said food quality is consistent (unlike Flint's), I can't say as I only have one sample. I will definately be back. Check them out. David

As I recall, Flint's shut for an extended period once before (in the 80s). Don't know why though. I always preferred E&J on San Pablo, anyway. The meat on the ribs there always seemed juicier. jd
