If you enjoy cooking with exotic and/or high quality ingredients, downtown Oakland has a lot to offer. The highlights: - Oakland Chinatown (more like Asia-town) is just South of Broadway below about 12th Street. Lots of Asian groceries, restaurants. Most restaurants have a few veg. items. - G.B. Ratto's food store is in Old Oakland, just north of Broadway, at 821 Washington. They sell all kinds of spices, beans, oils and deli items. - The Bean Bag sells about 50 kinds of beans. Among other things, they have the best price on French Green Lentils in the East Bay. Their shop is in the Housewive's Market at 825 Clay. - Farmer's markets: Friday at 9th and Broadway is Asian oriented, with greens like Tat Soi, trucks full of live chickens, etc. The Sunday market at Jack London Square has more of a foodie bent, with lots of bakeries and cheese makers. Both markets have a good selection of regular produce. In Berkeley, check out Vik's House of Chaat at 4th and Allston, in the back of a warehouse. Vik's serves a type of Indian snack known as Chaat. I don't know of many other Indian places that serve Chaat. Lots of veg. variety. The atmosphere is diametrically opposed to that of Greens, but the food is good and unique.
