Mike:

I can't tell you about the U.S.50 chalets because I've never tried them but I've noticed them change hands a few times. If you're in Sac and want great, unpretentious food and are willing to pay, head for Morton's of Chicago on L st. near 5th in the plaza. I haven't had aged beef that flavorful in years and the hash browns approach perfection. They have a big wine list and a well stocked bar and I think you can smoke cigars in the bar- it's separate from the dining area and diners needn't worry about cigar aromas. Expect to pay about $60 a person and up. Another place I've found to be reliably good is Paragay's on 28th and N. (Sacramento has such romantic street names.) It's more in the so-called California style but always seems to have some good things on the menu. They have good pizza appetizers and grill items, also a good bar. Pay about $30 a person and up.

Good eats- D.M.

A strong second here for Don's suggestion on Paragary's (corrrect spelling).
Excellent Cal/Ital food with a very nicely done wine-list
