Have you tried Ma Tante Sumi on 18th, just west of Cala Foods? ("Tante" is an idomatic word that means both aunt and fairy.) The food is essentially Japanese/French, and when on key they serve up exquisitely delicate flavors. I have had both outstanding and acceptable meals there, but never one that I could call really disappointing. They have a website that includes a sample menu. As I remember, approximately $30/person before beverages.

Not in the Castro per se, but half dozen blocks east on 18th Street is Delfina, one of my all time favorites. If you haven't been there, GO. Everything on the menu sings. It is dirt cheap for the quality, jammed every night (reserve), and terribly noisy. But whenever we have taken anyone there, they forget the noise when they are served and start murmering about their plates.
