The Old Alligator Bar and Grill has unfortunately closed. They have been closed for a couple of months. I heard they were tired of fighting with the city of Los Gatos. Your right, the hushpuppies were excellent (I am a southerner) and I was delighted to see a very unusual appetizer I've had back home - fried dill pickles! I don't know if they plan to open back up but I hope they do.

The only other place I have had catfish fillets were at _Mikes By the Bucket_ in San Jose on Stevens Creek near the car dealerships. They serve catfish beignets (sp) and do a good job. All their other food is excellent too.

I too would be interested in some places that serve good down home cooking.

Thanks,

I know of three down home type cooking places in Hayward. Two are really good, one has changed management and I'm not sure how they are now. They were marginally ok when I last went (about 3 years ago)

Anethas on Foothill in Hayward right where it runs into the 580/238 Octopus. They were really good and really friendly.

London Aire on "D" (?? "C"??) Street and Main or something like that. Near BART. Pretty good food. Used to have (may still) an all you can eat lunch buffet for a really good price. First time I'd ever had BBQ'd Balogna.

Home Cooking? (formerly Snappy Cat) where "B" Street turns into Kelly and intersects Center St. coming out of Castro Valley. Greens, Grits and all the rest.... If someone goes, post how it was.

The Blue Chalk Cafe in Palo Alto (on Emerson?, anyway it's right across from the municipal building) specializes in southern cuisine. It's pretty good, too.

The transplanted Georgian on my team salivates at the very mention of Lois the Pie Queen, which is close to us in north Oakland. Lois has gone on to the Great Pie Kitchen in the Sky, but her kids still run the place. Email for directions if you like. I like Susie Kate's too, but then I'm from Sacramento, what do I know ;-)?
