Of the list, this is also the only place that I visit. My impression is that most of the other places you list are bigger and more showy. Fringale is what I consider a typical SF place (great food, mostly informal atmosphere, small, neighborhood, simple). I bet that Bizou would be similar, but it's right next door to Fringale and I go there instead.

Of your list, I've been to Farallon, Aqua, and Fringale, and have heard good things about the others. If the price doesn't scare you away, Farallon certainly is impressive for out of towners. Food is very good, decor fabulous, service excellent. A little noisy. Very pricey. Ask them to fax you a menu.

Haven't been to Aqua in many years, but also expensive, beautiful, delicious. I would actually consider The Waterfront, which was recently redone. Food is fabulous, views are great, service is excellent (though I've heard others say they've had more mixed experiences with the service). If you do go there, don't miss the escolar apetizer. It's a fish in the mackerel family, quite oily (moist), and absolutely delicious.

Have fun!

I've been to Farallon, Rubicon, Aqua, and Bizou. I like Bizou very much - very good food, pleasant atmosphere, good service. Rubicon is also excellent, although a bit more formal. Farallon is pretty good, and very flashy. Aqua is a place to avoid: overpriced, pretentious, bad service, mediocre food.

We were wholly unimpressed a year ago. It didn't nearly live up to the buzz. Dry fish and uninteresting desserts. My wife was particularly steamed that a "berry" something turned out to be strawberries, and not good ones.
