I've enjoyed the following:

Thirsty Bear. Tapas. Brewpub also, but I've never
tried the beer and can't comment on it.

Cha Am. Thai food a block from MOMA. Not great, but perfectly adequate.

Lulu's. Trendoid cal/mediterranean grilled food. Quite good. Too noisy. The flourless chocolate cake is way highly recommended.

Fringale. Country French. Was especially impressed with the steamed vegetables, but other things were quite good too. Small restaurant. You'll need reservations.

South Park Cafe. Had a nice lunch there once. Pleasant atmosphere sitting outside. Good, French-oriented plain food. Maybe the best of the lot here.

My favorites near MOMA:
Henry's Hunan at New Montgomery & Minna
(go for the smoked ham with veggies)
Cadillac Bar & Grill--4th & Minna
(noisy, but great hardwood-grilled salmon, etc.)

There are two smaller rooms off to either side of the main room at Lulu. They're considerably quieter -- you might ask for a table there if noise is a big concern.

Second the recommendation for the cake! - Tony

Vinga, two blocks south of SFMOMA on Third St., is excellent. Has a small wine bar where you can get snacks, too.

The food at Thirsty Bear can be good, but the atmosphere and beer leave a lot to be desired.

The beer at 20 Tank on 11th St. is much better, especially the cask-conditioned--on sale Wednesday till it runs out, usually Thursday. That's a mile from SFMOMA, though. (South of Market is a big neighborhood.)

Also, Pepes Parilla, South Park. High end taqueria

Not SOMA, but only 5 mins walk from SFMOMA on Sutter near Kearny: Metropol. Quick service, excellent food, bustling atmosphere (somewhat noisy). Full lunch with beverage runs around $10.

In Yerba Buena Park, upper level (across 3rd St from SFMOMA) the Pasqua cafe. Yes, it's just a standard outlet in the Pasqua chain except for one thing: terrace seating with a spectacular view of the city. And Pasqua's premade sandwiches ain't so bad.

Actually, it's Pepito's Parilla. Excellent burritos, and good breakfasts, too.

I'd also like to add Bizou on Fourth right near the train station. (King St?) Great french bistro-ish food with a clean, bright dining room.

Along the line of Fringale, Bizou is another french/californian place. I believe it's on 4th Harrison, or around there. It's bigger but you probably still need a reservation.

Also one of Julia Child's fav. place is near the neighborhood. Tu Lan's on 6th just south of Market. It's a greasy vietnamese place with tasty and relatively inexpensive dishes.
