Not exactly San Mateo, but next town north (Burlingame).

   La Scala on Burlingame Avenue.

One of my favorites. Much prefer it over Kuleto's and Il Fornaio for just plain Italian, although my wife and I usually end up at the Il Fornaio bar. :)

Unfortunately, there is not a consistent, reliable Italian restaurant in SM. And as for La Scala, the food is mediocre, service from brusque to rude.

hmmm... We've always found Spiedo's to be consistent, reliable, and very good.

You make a good point, Glenn. I always think of Spiedo as a California type of restaurant. But Italian is its roots. Good call.

little snipping just for space...

I think it's called _Paul and Joe's_ and they have *GREAT* fried calamari.

  Paul Joe's is NOT A "Joe's" :-)...

It's a family owned/operated restaurant in San Carlos. The name comes
from the wife/husband team of Pauline and Joe...across the parking
lot ("south" on El Camino) is a absolutely wonderful Italian sandwich
place named Panini (duh! :-) ). It just so happens to be "run" by
Pauline's mom (Tina) and sister (Lilian)...both are VERY NICE, VERY
  warm and friendly people!!

I'm not gonna bore ya here...go try it. BUT, BEWARE :-) -- you ain't
gonna get mayo or mustard or ketchup or whole wheat or...GET IT??

Choice of two breads. Lilian roasts the peppers, etc, etc, etc. You WILL
get all very natural (tasty!) spreads and such on all the sandwiches.
Try the homemade (shit, everything's "home made") soup and Tina's
KILLER desserts. More expensive than yer everyday ham sandwich, but,
hey 'DIS IS A SANGWITCH dats worth it.

WOW...what an advertisement :-) I have NOTHING to do with the place...
I just happen to like IT and the people.
