Go to a place called Spike's! They Have 50 (Probably more now) Beers from around the world. The Story around the place is great, but too long to tell the whole thing.

You don't say what sort of food or budget you're interested in. The nicest Italian and service is Cafe Roma off Osos Street very near the Amtrak Station. Prices are up there but not really unreasonable. Specials are always excellent - Oso Buco is outstanding. Carpachio (sp) is my favorite appetizer. They often have a smoked salmon carpacio - I ask them to do half-n-half.

Carribean Fare: Pete's Southside Cafe in San Luis also near the Amtrak Station. Fish Vera Cruz is my favorite off the menu - specials are always good.

Lots and lots of good restaurants in the area. Best Japanese is Harada's in Morro Bay on the Embarcadero. Nice casual seafood sort of restaurant is Whales Tale also in Morro Bay.

Too many to list - sooooo many are soooooo good. Let me know if you need a narrower listing.

I agree here.. Cafe Roma is very nice, you could also take a short (15 minute) trip north to Templeton and visit Mcphee's Grill.. Fantastic place !

Central Coast or "Santa Maria style BBQ" is a must when visiting the SLO area. BBQ over "live" red oak is a local specialty along with pinquito beans which are grown only in the SLO area. Add the local style salsa and sourdough bread and it will be a meal long remembered. Tough decision between beer with BBQ or local wines. Some very good whites are produced between Santa Barbara and Paso Robles. Good reds, even good local spakling wine.

My favorites: The Hitching Post in Casmalia, about 45 minutes south of SLO.
More of a restaurant with a small bar. Very small
town but the
place draws a good crowd every night.

Far Western Tavern in Guadalupe. Same general area
as above, about 10 minutes closer. A great old bar with a restaurant. Best steak is the "Bulls-eye." A local sirloin
cut nugget style. Better than the filet on the
menu.

Jocko's in Nipomo. About 35 minutes south on Hwy
101.
Separate tables most of the time, sometimes
shoulder to shoulder when crowded. EXCELLENT french fries. Intersesting
hot sandwich called "The Stall." Slices of tri-tip
on thick toasted
                       sourdough with salsa.

McClintock's in Shell Beach, about 10 minutes
south on 101.
Caters more to toursists, still good. Turkey fries
if anyone's interested.

Alex, same as above , across the HWY. Appeals more
to locals
                       and return visitors.

                       McClintock's in SLO.

Forsake cholesterol and enjoy the local food (I'm not a local, just a periodic visitor myself).

My favorites are Jocko's and The Hitching Post. Been going to all of the above for over twenty years and they all remain consistent.

enjoy,
