I'll plug a friend's restaurant that I feel is completely worth plugging: 71 Saint Peter- small and intimate, with some of the best food in San Jose.

I also really like Eulipia and La Pastaia (name correct?).

With all due respect, I think the following suggestions:

: Il Fornaio, Scott's, La Foret, Garden City,Original Joe's, : California Cafe

Are mostly tired, old-school or chain restaurants. I'm not saying they are all bad (I kinda like a slab o' beef or a burger from OJ's, or some pasta from Il Fornaio), but they are not *special* or exciting IMHO. However, if the original poster is not keen on surprises (maybe older, less restaurant oriented, hates trendiness) they may be good suggestions.

71 St. Peter is very nice, however, you think Eulipia is <special>? You think La Pastaia is <special>? And then of course, you think that a small French restaurant in a historic location by a beautiful creek where deer and coyotes wander in the parking lot <isn't> special? The food ain't great, but you sure can't beat it for ambience... You call California Cafe "old-school"? (OK, CA cuisine <is> more than a bit worn out....) I'd like to point out that Armand (71 St. Pete)<worked> at tired old Scott's. There is nowhere that can come close to Garden City's prime rib (if you know of a place, I'd be interested!) Also, the only "chain" restaurants (actually, "corporate" is a more accurate description....) are the CA Cafe and Il Fornaio I'm not "older" or "less restaurant oriented" (what the hell does that mean?)---as a matter of fact, I <work> in a restaurant, and plan on going into my own business soon. And IMHO, <trendy> sucks, unless you like going out of business overnight. Just my 2 cents.
