Restaurants: There are many good ones. I especially like the Blue Point
(seafood) which has a great martini bar and the Cajun Cafe in the
 Gaslamp Quarter.

Mexican Food: You can't miss San Diego's signature food, Fish Tacos at
Rubio's (there are some better, but Rubio's is where it started).

Microbreweries: My favorite is Callahan's in Mira Mesa Mall. Nice
selection and not Americanized (i.e. weak as water) as is Carl Strauss's
places. It is also my hang out. I'll be on the 5th stool down hanging on
 to a Guinness.

Old Town has many choices for Mexican Food. Lots of Ethnic food places
especially on Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa. But for pure fun and
adventure, you can't beat the Gaslamp area for a night on the town. San
Diego has lots of good pick-nick places. Lots of parks including the 2nd
largest city park in the US and the HUGE Mission bay aquatic park. Also
there are 70 miles of beaches! Enjoy your trip!

Some of the best places are in downtown, Gas Lamp, Seaport Village, Old
Town. Pick a place in San Diego it wll be great.
Micro breweries try Hops in the Gas Lamp on 5th. Also my husband says
that Carl Strauses in Sorrento Valley is great and has great
 atmostphere(make Reservation).
Mexican try Old Town Mex. My neighbor who is mexican swears by it.
If you are looking for a good seafood place try The Fish House in
Cardiff by the Sea, right on the ocean.
Hope these help. I lhave lived here for 5 years and I love it.

Well, let's see...being as I've lived in San Diego all my 38 years, here
 are my suggestions:

Mexican: Old Town Mexican Cafe (for full service traditional). The carnitas
and tortillas are to die for! Rubios (for take out/quick service) -- if you
are coming to San Diego, you must try a fish taco (yum!) or else you are
not allowed to leave the city. Also: El Indio (also for take out) is
legendary in these parts. And of course, there are innumerable tiny taco
shacks on almost every other block which are quite greasy but very tasty
(you'll notice most of their names end in "...berto's")

Seafood: Anthony's Harborside is the local favorite, but I like the Fish
Market (both are located along San Diego Bay with great waterside views).
But again, the fish taco from Rubio's is the adopted San Diego specialty.

Microbrews: My personal preference is the San Diego Brewing Company in
Mission Valley. For atmosphere, Karl Strauss' Brew Garden in Sorrento
Valley gets high marks. There are quite a few other microbreweries in the
 area.

Delis: If you want a true Jewish/New York deli, there is only one I
recommend: D.Z. Akins near San Diego State Univiersity. Every conceivable
sandiwch there is, great matzo ball soup, and a HUGE menu. Plus an
 extensive bakery with chocolate babkas!

Picnic: You can't miss with Balboa Park (where all the museums, the Zoo,
etc. are located). Seaport Village park is nice near the bay. Mission Bay
Park has tons of picnic areas. Anywhere along the beaches. I also recommend
taking a drive into the back country (Julian) if you have time...

Also be sure to do the tourist thing and visit the Gaslamp Quarter
downtown, which is basically restaurant row(s), and La Jolla. There are
also plenty of chains which you will be familiar (Morton's, Ruth Chris'
Steakhouse, Wolfgang Puck), but the above suggestions are my LOCAL personal
 favs.

Hope you have a nice time.

PS: Yes, dress at most restaurants is extremely casual.

I've been consistently disappointed whenever I've been to Croce's
restaurant. There's tons of other restaurants in the Gaslamp that
are far better (Blue Point Coastal, Bella Luna, Trattoria La Strada,
Osteria Pannevino, Fio's, Trattoria Mama Anna are just a few off
the top of my head). I suggest eating somewhere else and then visiting
Ingrid's Cantina (Ingrid Croce's jazz bar) afterwards.

 Hi,

Has anyone mentioned Croce's which is in downtown San Diego? Understand
it is great ... owned by Jim Croce's widow. And, of course, the usual
don't miss the SD Zoo advice.
