Regional differences are one of the spices of life, Mike (this is not a flame). From taquitos and fish tacos to cultures and climate, enjoy it, don't fight it.

Karen O' <the only thing Irish about me is the apostrophe>

P.S. Fiesta del Mar at Shoreline and Bayshore -- great swordfish tacos.

Now just who is it who decides "the way burritos are supposed to be made"? This is not a flame, I'm seriously and most humbly curious. Is there perhaps a Burrito Regulatory Agency (i.e., a BRA) in Washington to uphold these principles (or whatever)? Or maybe in the Sonoran or Baja Norte government?

By the way, I'm also a fan of El Indio (especially the taquitos) and of the Carne Asada Burritos at places like Alfonso's (sp?) in La Jolla. But I don't think that San Diego area has better Mexican food than the Bay area, just somewhat different. (And the best Mexican food in my opinion comes from places which may have never heard of burritos.)

As for fish tacos, have you tried La Salsa's? That's a southern CA chain which has expanded to the Bay Area (there's one on San Antonio Rd. in Mountain- view); I'm not a good judge of fish taco's, since they aren't a favorite of mine in any case.

La Costena in Mtn View at Rengstorff and Old Middlefield grills their carne asada while you wait. Since they build the entire burrito to your specifications, you can also leave out the rice and beans if you so prefer. I also happen to think they have the best guacamole of any burrito place around. It is take-out only. The same food is available at their sister sit-down restaurant down the street, Burrito Real (on Rengstorff in the Lucky plaza).

That may be true, but for killer Mexican food try:La Guad.. Market #2 10th & Empire, San Jose.

No, they don't have your fancy chicken right off the grill, but they have a mean lamb's head and fantastic goat burritos.
