Ugh.

Mercado La Torre will satisfy those burrito urges. Evelyn and Fair Oaks.

Dairy Belle will give you an alternative to the big burger joints. Mathilda just south of the freeway between the Shell and Chevron stations.

Fresh Choice on Moffett Park. Turn right just after the 237 interchange if you're going north on Mathilda, left just before the interchange if you're headed south. Go down about 3 blocks.

Java St. Cafe on Java between Bordeaux and Borregas (I think). All kinds of food, and it's all pretty good.

There's also a Togo's and a place called Cafe Melange in the little shopping center at Crossman and Java.

Seto for Japanese fare at Maude and Bordeaux, just south of the Mathilda/Maude intersection.

Thanh Da is just a little south of that near the intersection of Sunnyvale and Maude. Good Thai/Cambodian/Chinese.

      Casa Lupe(?) next door.
Giovanni's 1 block north of 101 in same plaza as
      Hong Sing.
Sneha ( Indian buffet ) on Lawrence near Kern ( other
      side of Lawrence though ).

I've been working in that area (Java/Borregas) for about a year now. Here's where I and my co-toilers eat (in no particular order). We mostly eat out, not takeout, although we can't/don't afford PF/CB/Fz, either.

1) Than Da, on Maude between Fair Oaks and Mathilda. Hole-in-the-strip-mall Thai/Viet/Chinese. Parking can be difficult.

2) Deli/diner on Java, about 1/2 block east of Borregas. Lots of salad, sandwich, and hot entree choices.

3) Chevy's. In desparation only.

4) Senor Jalapeno, Mary between Central and Maude, near Sun Micro. The usual belly-bomb burritos.

5) Mexican (name slips my mind) on S. Murphy, near Tao Tao. Pretty good.

6) Japanese (sort of), same area as #5, but fronting on the parking lot between S. Murphy and S. Sunnyvale Ave. I like their donburi, but haven't been there in a while.

7) Clarks, ECR near Castro.

8) The usual spots on Castro. We tend to spend most of our time there in Sue's or Chef Wangs.

9) Giovanni's Pizza, strip mall near Lawrence and Tasman. Thin-crust pizza, plus some pretty good sandwiches.

10) Chinese (name escapes me), same location as #9. Dim sum every day.

11) Kabul. Definitely not cheap, but good.

Good luck!

If you're thinking of Murphy St., it's not really that far from 101...just down Mathilda past Central. Stoddard's is a nice brewpub if you're not in a hurry, don't forget the sunglasses for the patio out back. Great little place on the corner right near there...is it thai? (I haven't been in ages.)

El Faro. Good place.

Also on Murphy is Ocean View. They have Dim Sum every day as well.

And don't forget Stoddards, more expensive, but they have beer.

And on the corner of Evelyn and Murphy is one of the best Thai restaurants around, Thai Basil. Don't tell anyone, though. It's very small.

SarOvar on Lawrence opposite Fry's is one o the better Indian buffets in the area. The mongolian barbecue on El Camino (forget the name) beside the billiard hall is good as well (the one further down EC isn't worth dog food). On the burrito end, Pollo Rey just off the corner of Lawrence and Steven's Creek is worth a vist, with By The Bucket being an excellant pizza choice a littel further down the road.

Actually it's Evelyn and Murphy.

I like Thanh Da at 253 Maude a few blocks south/east of
Mathilda. The place isn't much to look at inside, but I like the food a lot. I can only comment on their vegetarian dishes which number only about 5 or so. However, they are very accomodating and will make most dishes they can with tofu.

The vegetarian spring rolls are wonderful as is the vegetarian
cold noodle dish. They also have a wonderful tofu curry dish.

The cuisine is somewhat of a mix of Chinese, Vietnamese and
Thai dishes (not necessarily in that order). The prices are reasonable and the proportions are generous.

My office is on Mary between Maude and Central. There's a small strip mall across the street (Mary at Corte Madera) full of mostly mediocre lunch places. The salmon teriyaki plate at the Sushi Club is a good deal (I think it's $7 for salmon, rice, and a couple of pieces of canned tuna salad maki), but most of their other lunch specials are loaded with a big pile of unappetizingly grey teriyaki chicken pieces. Sen~or Jalapeno's has reasonably good burritos and tacos, but not in the same class as La Bamba or La Costen~a, IMHO. They used to be just awful, but their quality inexplicably improved sometime in the past year.

De La Cruz Deli at Maude and Mary has pretty good pastrami (although you do have to tell them not to put mayonnaise on it).

If you're looking for a good taqueria, go to La Torre on Evelyn at Fair Oaks. That's my favorite in the area. A little further out in that direction there's an Armadillo Willy's and a Mr. Chau's Fast Food, both in the same mall on El Camino at Cezanne (just north/west of Fair Oaks).

There is also a pretty good sushi place across the street (the side street, not El Camino) from Willy's and Chau's.

Mr. Chau's usually has long lines. A new option ( and one that I like better ) is over at the SW corner of Sunnyvale Saratoga and El Camino. It's run by the same folks as Tien Fu up in Mountain View on Castro, and there's a "Tien Fu 2" on the sign on El Camino. The food isn't quite as good as the original, but the original's food is prepared to order and Tien Fu 2 is steam table. When we were there last, we got complementary green onion cakes & sauce & hot and sour soup. Tien Fu 2 isn't the large name on the sign, maybe something like "Wok & Go" ?

There is a new(ish) Indian buffet in Sunnyvale Towne Center, right in the front. I had lunch there last Friday and it was really good.
