Gombei is a Japanese bar located on Jackson between 4th and 5th Streets. It is one of the most popular locations in Japantown, especially for the lunch crowd. Their prices are rather cheap for Japanese food, entrees ranging from $6-8 for lunch and $7-10 for dinner. Tax is already calculated into the prices on the menu, just like Japan. Decor is traditional. Service is prompt. The selection consists of domburi, ramen, tempura, teriyaki, and curry. No sushi, by the way. The domburi are particularly good, as is the Gombei special combo. At the peak of lunch hour, long lines can form outside, though. Kazoo is another Japantown restaurant, on Taylor and 6th Street. It has more of a proper dining ambience to it, and a larger selection on its menu, including full bento meals and the services of a sushi bar. The price range is from $5 up, but averages to be a bit more expensive than Gombei. Semi-private dining areas are available for parties of four or more at no additional cost. Also in the area is Rickabee's, a casual barbecue joint on 6th between Jackson and Taylor, next to a Christian church. The owner and waiter(s) are quite personable and the food is delicious, although their is no atmosphere to speak of. Prices are quite reasonable. The sweet potato pie is scrumptious at this place. After lunch, while in the Japantown area, check out Nikaku, on the corner of 6th and Taylor opposite Kazoo. It's a Japanese arts and crafts store on the second storey. It also has international fame for its supply of Japanese animation-related merchandise. Niko, [email removed]
