For Italian food at it's best, try Biba's. For mid-range, try Harlow's. California cusine is good at Paraguary's and Shot of Class.

I like Celestin's at 2516 J Street. It's French Caribbean food.

Club 400 at Alhambra and N has good sandwiches at lunch -- a friend of mine makes them. It's a strip club. :-)

Several good places in the touristy Old Sacramento area.

A great place for a fine dining experience is very nearby in Fair Oaks, California (a Sacramento suburb) Try the Slocum House. The chef there is Vincent Alexander. He does a suberb and ethusiastic presentation of truly fine California cuisine. He was trained at the California Culinary Academy, and has apprenticed under Hubert Keller of Fleur de Lys in San Francisco, and Postrio in San Francisco. The restaurant is located in the former home of one of the founding fathers of the Fair Oaks area and it has been registered on the National List of Historic Places.

The food and service are always excellent.

According to my partner, during her one visit there (about a month ago) the ambience and decor were delightful, the ingredients were impeccably fresh and of excellent quality, and many of the preparations were also excellent. The sauces, however, she found to be disappointing.

Echoing other posters, my favorite in the Scramento area is Biba's.
