Fandango, in Pacific Grove, is my favorite place in the area.

Interesting but not as classy is Bindle's (sp?) in Monterey.

Restaurants in Monterey
I tried three places in the Monterey area last September that I think are worth recommending:
1. Peppers - a "Mexicali cafe". A local-type hangout.
2. Fandango - great food; exceptional rack of lamb.
3. Fishwife - my favorite; great food, and right next to Asilomar
Beach and Spanish Bay Golf Course...perfect for a leisurely
walk while waiting for a table, unless you're pressed for time
and made a reservation. Closed Mondays I think.

Actually, all these are in Pacific Grove on the Monterey Peninsula.

I'm a big fan of the Sunday brunch at the Monterey Plaza Hotel -- it's an appetizer buffet, and entree you order off the menu, and a dessert buffet. The desserts include things like chocolate mousse, fruit pastries, and extravagant chocolate cake. The appetizers include lox, salads, and fresh fruit.

O'kane's is an Irish/sports bar with table seating and good, inexpensive pub food -- Irish stew, fish and chips, etc. -- and wonderful desserts. My favorite is a peanut butter fudge pie.

El Cocodrilo in Pacific Grove serves great food with a strong South and Central American influence. For example, over Thanksgiving I had turkey with a Yucatean-style cranberry-orange-achiote sauce with wild rice and corn tamales. And they do serve crocodile, if that sort of thing suits your fancy.
