Here are some faves, all places for which I would go well out of my way to catch a meal. Brent's Deli - Northridge (San Fernando Valley): The best deli in SoCal. Forget all the one's you've heard about. Brent's consistently scores high marks in the Zagat guide, right up there with all the fancy places you have heard about. Everything on the menu rocks with the exception of the potato skins which suck. La Frite - Sherman Oaks (San Fernando Valley): Typical French bistro cuisine, all excellent, even if they don't have Roquefort dressing for the salad. Best creme brulee I have ever eaten. Service is enigmatic...if you go in expecting the worst you might be pleasantly surprised, but you won't be disappointed. Serenata De Garibaldi - Boyle Heights (Downtown LA): A nasty part of town, but the restaurant is right across from the police station and they have valet parking. Outstanding Mexican, with an emphasis on seafood, uniquely prepared. They also have another branch, Serenata Gourmet on the Westside. Hampton's - Hollywood: Upscale burgers, salads and sandwiches. Nice garden setting. Phillipe's - Downtown LA: Originator of the French dip sandwich. A restaurant unlike any other you have enjoyed. Plenty of great food, reasonable prices and excellent people watching. Kokomo's and The Gumbo Pot - in the Farmer's Market (towards the Westside): Excellent food, al fresco dining. Great hot sauce shop between the 2 sites. Various Pinot locations - owned by one of LA's greatest chefs, Joachim Splichal. We prefer Pinot Bistro in Studio City (San Fernando Valley) and the Martini Bar at Pinot Hollywood. And no visit to SoCal is complete without a visit to In 'n' Out Burger, arguably the greatest fast food burger in the universe. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Remove a "syn" from my reply address before replying by email Tonefully yours...
