Recommendation for Indonesian Restaurant in S.F.?

Per an Indonesian friend, Indonesian restaurants tend to change hands frequently (people often buy them as a first step toward getting permanent residence), and thus the quality tends to vary. Rice Table in San Rafael's an exception--same family for years.

My friend's favorite place to get Indonesian food is Singapore-Malaysian Restaurant on Clement St., a Penang-style place. The Malay and Indonesian cuisines are closely related and share many disnes, like satay and rendang. Malaysisn cuisine also includes Chinese and Indian dishes, reflecting the country's ethnically mixed population.

Hi,

One of my favorite restaurants is "Java", an Indonesian restaurant on Clement at about 5th. I often take groups of friends there for their Indonesian Rice Table. Last time I was there, about 6 months ago, it was still about 9 or 10$ per person for a large variety of small dishes. You won't be disappointed. Let me know if you try it and how you liked it.

It's a way's north but I would try the Rice Table in San Rafael. There's a 10-12 course meal that you can get there that really gives you an excellent variety.

Borobodur in SF is decent as is Dutch East Indies (atleast I think that's the name) in Jack London Sq in Oakland. The one in Oakland has a chatty proprietress who will make you your dish of choice if you ask her.

I know of two that are right in San Francisco, they are within a block of each other on Post at Jones. One is called The Indonesian Restaurant and the other is Burobudor (I'm sure that is not spelled correctly - but it is somewhat close). My favorite is The Indonesian Restaurant, the food is very good and the prices are more than reasonable.

The Rice Table in San Rafael, recommend below, is excellent. Just don't go there without a reservation or chances are VERY SLIM that you will get in. It is well worth the effort to go there.

Hope that helps,
Hans

Here's a short list of the places I've been to:

1. Java - on Geary (across from the Bridge).
2. Java - on Clement (close to 6th Ave).
3. Jakarta - on Balboa (close to 7th Ave).
4. Indonesian Cafe (Restaurant?) - on Post near downtown.
5. Bourobudor (sp?) - up the block from Indonesian Cafe.

My wife is Indonesian and her family loves Jakarta. Look for their website for more info.

Enjoy!
