Try Matsuhisa on La Cienga. Top Japanese in LA.

The same. It is amazing--get the specials even if you can't figure out what they are. The guy who was running that place is now manager for a new place in Tustin called "Fish-Shin" which is simply stunning. It's kinda like Musha but "sophisticated".

There's another place across the parking lot from Musha if your friends specifically want sashimi/sushi and not kappo/izakaya. I think it may have "seafood" in the title. It's the business in the last slot of the strip center. It calls itself kappo but isn't. Go figure. But the quality for their sushi/sashimi is supposed to be really high. Add a few dollars for each participant...

If you want to blow them away with how totally cool it is to live in SoCal, take them afterward to the little karaoke place that is directly across the lot from Musha. I forget the name. Thet charge by the hour for their little rooms and it is so fun. Smuggle in some sake and snaku from Mitsuwa--they don't care as long as you're discreet.
