How did the menu and food compare to other Afghan Restaurants in the bay area? Someone wrote: : I just wanted to let folks know that I recently tried a wonderful new : place here in the culinary wasteland that is Fremont. We truly do not : have many high-quality restaurants : so it was such a pleasant surprise when I saw the Grand Opening banner : while driving down Fremont Blvd. in the Centerville district and decided : to try it. I have been wanting to do an extended review for awhile but : am unable to do so because of ongoing hand and elbow problems which make : typing very tedious so I can only give the particulars as to location, : hours of operation, etc., as well as a few general comments. : Salang Pass Restaurant : 37462 Fremont Blvd. : (Centerville district) : Fremont : : 795-9009 phone 795-9200 fax : M-F 10:00-10:00 : S/S 11:00-10:30 : I ordered from the appetizer section (each of which is $3.99, but you : can order any 4 : for $11.99). I opted for the 4-items and discovered that I had nearly : enough food for three people (but I didn't complain! ;-) ). The : flavors were very nice. The owner/chef was extremely gracious and : explained any questions I had. He stated that the food was : mildly seasoned and when I mentioned that I really liked hot, spicy food : he said that : he could adjust the seasonings for me. There were two flavorful dipping : sauces for : the dishes and the breads. One was a delightful green sauce with : cilantro, garlic and : jalapenos, among other things. The red sauce was a surprise because when : I first tasted it I thought of Wishbone Russian dressing. It was fairly : sweet...but then I noticed a : little buzz on the lips. I liked the balance of sweet and "hot". I put : hot in parentheses because I am not the person to ask whether something : is hot or not because : I munch on habaneros (so, if asked if a dish was hot, my response is : always, "No, but : it is *flavorful*!"). : For those familiar with the Centerville area the restaurant is located a : few doors south : of the fire station (i.e., towards the Hub shopping center) on the same : side of the street. For those from out of the area probably the best way : would be to take 880 to : the Thornton Ave. East exit and go, perhaps, a mile (????) or so to : Fremont Blvd. Make : a right turn and go ~1/2 mile (over RR tracks) until you come to Peralta : Blvd. (On the : left side of Peralta is an Uncle Sam's Buffet and on the right is a new : nightclub called : The Beat.). Cross Peralta (you are almost there now!) and watch for the : Naz Theater : (an Indian movie house) on the right. The fire station is across the : street. Thus, the : restaurant is a couple of doors past the station on the left. : I really wish I could have gone into detail about the menu but : left-handed, one-fingered : typing is more than a little frustrating so let me just say that the : place was very nicely appointed, the flavors were very clean and : enjoyable and the service was extremely gracious. I did not get to try : dessert (next time!) but I did have a very refreshing Rasberry Iced Tea. : I highly recommend Salang Pass and wish them a long stay in Fremont : because quality restaurants are hard to come by. : Bon appetit, : Warren : P.S. The appetizers can be ordered as entrees but I don't know why : anyone would want to : because the portions were really quite generous.
