Hmmmm....the problem is you are using good, inexpensive and Long Beach in the same sentence. Long Beach is not known for having a generous supply of eateries. However, being that it is Southern California, I would suggest SuperMex at the corner of Alamitos and 1st Avenue (just a few blocks from the Convention Center). It is "Americanized" Mexican food, but it is very good and quite tasty. It is a "locals" hangout. The atmosphere is fun and young people seem to enjoy the place. It would be difficult to pay over $5 for your meal.

If they aren't interested in Mexican my only other suggestion for the downtown area would be Johnny Rockets on Pine Avenue (in between Broadway and 3rd). Delicious hamburgers and yummy chocolate cokes.

I hope your brother-in-law isn't disappointed with Knott's Chicken Dinner. It has continued to slide further and further down the scale of acceptable grub. I realize that there is a nostalgia factor and this seems to help one get through the dinner. I'm not real sure what the problem is, but I would guess that they are not changing the oil that they fry in often enough. But the little biscuits are still worth sitting for, provided they bring you fresh, hot ones! Beware.

Local flavor? How local? Are we limiting it to Long Beach again? And are we limited on the price range?
