I'll tell you, but you've got to promise to trim that 15-line signature; those things are a significant waste of bandwidth. I recommend the restaraunt at the Highlands Inn in Carmel. The view is lovely; there's a quiet, cozy deck for alfresco dining, and the food is excellent. You run into interesting people there, too, if y'all are in the mood to talk to others.

I'll strongly second Albert on both counts! Pacific's Edge at the Highland Inn is a great, if pricey, place for a romantic dinner. I especially like their prix fixe, 4 or 5 course dinner. It saves you the difficult decision of choosing from that menu, has a different wine selected for each course, and was very well served, with explanations of why a particular wine or ingredients were chosen. You also might want to check out their Sunday brunch, which I've been to a few times and was always delicious. As much as I would like to disagree with the previous two postings, I _just_ returned from a three day meeting (unfortunately sans spouse) at the Highlands Inn. All I can say is go there immediately. It has everything one would want for a romantic wine and food experience. Not to mention a breathtaking view in the morning if you decide to stay for the night. Even have binoculars in each room for bird and/or coastline watching during the stay. When you get the romance out of your system, I might suggest a trip into downtown Carmel for a great Italian dinner at Mondo...excellent !!! To top it off you should head down to the Pebble Beach equestrian center for a trail ride through the dunes.

Personally, as a former Monterey resident, I've never been all that fond of the Highlands Inn (which, BTW, is actually in Carmel Highlands and is about 5 or 10 miles down the coast). IMHO, they're mostly selling the view (which, of course, is nothing to sneeze at). Their Sunday Brunch isn't bad, though. However, there are several better restauants in Carmel, both for atmosphere and for food. My personal favorite is La Boheme, at 7th and Dolores, in Carmel. I was a semi-regular there when I lived in Monterey and never had even an average meal over a period of nearly 10 years -- all were excellent. The Coq d'Or and Scandia are also pretty good but it's been a while since I've had a chance to visit them. spl -- Steve Lamont, SciViGuy -- (619) 534-7968 -- [email removed] San Diego Microscopy and Imaging Resource/UC San Diego/La Jolla, CA 92093-0608 "I am the sixty-megabyte core file you cannot find." - anonymous crossposter to a kazillion groups From [email removed] Wed Jul 20 14:23:41 1994 Subject: Re: Monterey, CA: romantic dinner To: [email removed] (Robin B. This is GREAT STUFF! Unfortunately, ours was a last-minute trip, and I posted too late (Thu, 14Jul) for your response to arrive before we left on Saturday AM. I thought that some local folks would have time in which to reply, but no luck, SO we were on our own. We chose Ferrante's, on top of the Monterey Marriott, which has a truly _fabulous_ view of Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf, Monterey Bay, etc! Joyce had Swordfish and Angel Hair Pasta, which she enjoyed tremendously. I ordered a Chicken Fettucini, with Pecans and I forget what else. I'll bet that it would have been good with prawns rather than chicken, but I wouldn't order it again as is. We will definately use the information you sent on our next trip down there. La Boheme sounds especially attractive!
