Passionfish in Pacific Grove is a good choice in that price range (used to be El Cocodrilo, new owners are great). For seafood go to Monterey's Fish House and don't be fooled by the skimpy looking menu because anything they have can be cooked any way they cook there. (Have some oak BBQ'd oysters, Yum!) Roy's at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach is always a treat. Cafe Rustica in Carmel Valley is very good. Breakfast at the Wagon Wheel in Carmel Valley is a local favorite. Just past Tarpey's on Hwy 68 is Billy Qoun's at Ryan Ranch (call and make reservations and get them to give you directions). Billy Quon is a local legend restrateur, this is his newest place, Asian/California fusion. Stokes Adobe is just about in that price range and is excellent. And John Pisto is now serving Kobe beef at the Whaling Station, so if you are in the mood for a steak, you can't beat that. That's all I can think of without getting out the phone book or having a glass of wine and I'm doing this at my desk, dammit. Get the Thursday Monterey Herald. In the "GO" section the restaurant reviewer has the latest review and little excerpts from the last 25 or so reviews and that can be helpful. If you mention any dishes/foods you really enjoy it might jostle my aging brain and cause something else to pop out.
