Apart from a smattering of El Torito's and Red Onion's all over the SF valley, there's also Casa Vega in Studio City on Ventura, that's been there maybe 40 years.

Oh, but there are. If you like seafood, you'll really love La Paz on Victory just west of DeSoto. Another good place is just east of Reseda on Vanowen, across the street from PetSmart, Ralph's, etc. They've got a specialty burrito with chicken and peppers that's outstanding.

Casa Vega in Sherman Oaks is a good one, there's also Don Cuco's in Burbank, Granada in Burbank, Mucho Mas (not to be confused with Poquito Mas, which is more of a take-out with a dining room, but also very good) on the Burbank-North Hollywood border, Lenore's Vegetarian Mexican Food in North Hollywood, Ernie's Taco House in North Hollywood, Rusty's Hacienda in North Hollywood.

I don't know much about the West Valley, other than the chain places. There's also Taxco in West Hollywood, not the Valley but close enough if you live in the Valley.

The place on Vanowen, east of Reseda - are you referring to Las Fuentes? It's one of my favorite (informal) places. I particularly like their carnitas platter (~$6), salsa bar, and horchata.

Another favorite Mexican place is El Indio on Roscoe. I think it's west of Balboa. It's a small, hole-in-the-wall place and is open 24 hours.

On re-inspection, I can recommend Ana's on Victory between Hazeltine and Woodman. I'd given up on them because of their kitchen disorganization last summer. But everything seems back on track now. Not a great place, but good for the Valley. Nice chicken mole enchiladas. The albondigas is better than most.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but I went over the weekend to Los Torros in Chatsworth.

I've never been there before, but its great, and the prices are very good!

Yes, not gourmet, simple, good and it is authentic.
