Mazzini: A mini review.

We had lunch yesterday (Sat.) at Mazzini in Berkeley. This trattoria was recommended by a friend who works at Alta Bates Hospital. Mazzini occupies the space on Telegraph just North of Ashby formerly Casa de Eva. The remodeled entry has a bar, bar tables and it opens into a huge, tiled kitchen. The dining tables are in two other rooms to the left.

There is a wood burning pizza oven. We tried a white pizza; it had caramelized onions, gorgonzola and walnuts. We also had the polpettone, a meatloaf served with a very rich porcini mushroom sauce. We liked both dishes. At a nearby table, a woman had cacciucco, a fish stew. She said it was very good.

The service was uneven. Our water glasses were filled at least ten times, but I saw a woman wait 15 minutes to receive her 3 scoops of gelati. I had limoncello. It was good, but not served in a chilled glass.

We'll go back and try it again.

We also found the service to be poor, but the food, I thought was excellent, and the wines are well-selected, and fairly-priced, actually they are amazingly fairly priced.

So will we.
