Joe's in Venice on Abbott Kinney is the answer to your problem. Order the tasting menu and all will be well with the world.

L'Orangerie on LaCienega. Hands down. You'll drop $300 for dinner, but the food is amazing, you'll have a full staff of utterly professional waiters at your service (one just to pour the melted chocolate over your dessert soufflé, in fact), and they'll ask lovely questions you don't hear *anywhere* else, such as, "Would you like us to open the roof for you?"

Trust me, she'll be impressed. I was.

I recently had a nice meal in pleasant surroundings at Drago on Wilshire in Santa Monica. Melisse, also on Wilshire, would fit the style and ambience you are looking for but is not exactly moderately priced by most definitions. Someone suggested L'Orangerie at $300 for two. I think Melisse would be less expensive than that (I only had lunch there and without wine.) Woodside on San Vicente in Brentwood may also be a good option.
