Liz and I tried out the Garden of Taxco tonight. Bad timing! Today was Father's Day, and lots of big parties were there celebrating graduation from UCLA, so we had to wait 25 minutes for a table (but hey, we got to play Ms. Pacman, so it wasn't all bad).

Liz liked the family style atmosphere. The lack of menus was a bit disconcerting, as no prices were mentioned by the waiter who explained the choices. I ordered the shishkabob, she ordered the shrimp in mole. The appetizers (quesadilla, chicken enchilada in cheese sauce, meatball soup) were quite good. Contrary to what I'd heard, they do serve margaritas -- by the carafe. By the time the entrees arrived, were were full and soused :-) Liz said the shrimp were quite tender, and the mole was almost as good as that at Guelaguetza. My shishkabob was tasty, but I could only eat one of its hunks of pot roast, having filled up on the chips etc. (Leftovers are always a good thing.) Dessert was a banana creme pudding, with a glass of sherry on the house. One of those roving guitarists chose the moment we were both maximally inebriated to ask if we wanted a serenade. In my moment of weakness, I said yes, and I kind of enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I only had a $20, so he had to dig for change. I gather the going rate is $2-$3. Valet parking was $1.50. All in all, I blew $66 on dinner, drinks, and distraction for two; probably could have gotten away for half that if I'd left off the drinks, coffee, and huge tip for the guitarist. Oh, well.

It was more fun than we expected. And we were both happily stuffed. (As Liz said on arriving home, "I can't believe I ate the whole thing!" OK, we're easily amused...)
