I also live in Oakland. I've tried Kirala a couple of times, but the Sushi was not as good as I had anticipated from all the great comments. Also, the wait was long.

My favorite pseudo-local place is Genki, on San Pablo at Cedar. Good fresh sushi, and very friendly chefs.

I did go to Kyo Ya, and arrived about 7 pm. Several people had said reservations were not needed, so we didn't have any. The sushi bar was full - we declined a place at a table, put our names down, and went across the street to the pub. When we came back at 8 the bar was quiet.

We ended up having a good quantity of excellent nigiri, with a saki sampler and a flask of one of the sakis we liked a lot. Both the uni and toro were some of the best I have ever tasted, but the bill (with tip, for two) came to $225 - very good food but I'm not sure I'll be back in a hurry.

I'm suprised to hear this. Kirala's known for their grill, and
NOT their sushi. While they do have sushi, it's fairly mediocre.

     Personally, while I like Kirala's grilled items, I don't
consider it worth the usual 45 minute wait.
