I have had the pleasure of eating at a truly excellent Indian restaurant and I want to share it with others who enjoy fine Indian food. I’ve eaten in Indian restaurants from Delhi to London to San Francisco and this one is the equal of any. It is called Swarna and is located in Walnut Creek, not too far east of San Francisco. They specialize in Madras food and make quite exceptional dosas and sambar (my wife says its is the best she has had). They also have good tandoori and quite a nice selection of curries, both vegetarian and with meat. The family that runs it cares a lot about the food they make and the way their guests are treated. We stopped by for their excellent lunch buffet and when I said that my wife would like a dosa, they whipped up a marsala dosa and included it in the fixed price for lunch. If you’d like to try them out they are located at 1690 Locust St. in Walnut Creek (not far from the Regional Arts Theater) and their phone is 510/933-1110.

Concur with rave on Swarna. Took a friend there for lunch on Wednesday. Usually I have trouble getting Indian restaurants to leave out the ghee but my Utthapam had no trace of oil (I did request it oil-free). Sambar was also excellent. Would have been $3.50 but I remembered my Veggie Trek discount card (thanks Das) so it was less. Glad to have this new South Indian so close.
