My advice would be to drive an hour north to Visalia and go to the Vintage Press. Excellent food and service, yet not too formal, and a 600 label wine list. When I'm in Bakersfield I usually eat at a Basque place, but since they are locals, it probably wouldn't be a treat. D.M.

: Thanks for any help.

I'm partial to Benjy's, out on Route 58 just west of town. It has some of the classiest Basque food I've ever had, especially their rack of lamb. For a different sort of Basque meal, there's the Noriega Hotel in the heart of town, with one family style seating at communal tables. But the food is extraordinary. Since Bakersfield has a unique Basque community, that's the only cuisine I eat when I travel through that city.

You'll probably find Woolgrowers among the successful Basque operation there.

: Care to recommend any of the Basque places?

Try the Pyrenees Cafe and their neighbor, one block to the west (Sorry, can't remember the name). They are both close by the RR tracks as good Basque boarding houses shoud be.
