Grand scabs

Paid a visit to the non-union Grand Cafe this evening.
It's a physically lovely place but it's so noisy that I could easily hear the conversations of others but not the woman across the table from me. Buried deep in the background humroarbuzz was piped music, too, but all I could hear was the occasional blast from a Big Band's back line. This caused me to notice that all the surfaces are hard except for a few small drapes.
The whimsical statuary are cute but not my bag but I did like the chandeliers even though they're a bit large for the space.
Although there are cloths on the tables, they're covered with paper that, for me, was a nuisance.
She had sweetbreads judged to be delicious and I rabbit that was equally good. Each dish was $17. We shared a glass of Pinot blanc that cost $7.50 for a total of $50.
Although the food was very good, the quantities were minuscule, hardly more than appetizers at most restaurants. Yes, it's probably "California Cuisine" that, when I asked, Paul Moor told me is "too fucking little for too fucking much" and that's just what the Grand Cafe serves.
Her sweetbreads were accompanied with "the best mashed potatoes I've ever had". My rabbit had a few asparagus cooked with celery. Very nice. And also a new potato cut flat on one end so it could stand; the other end split with a tiny strip of crisp bacon inserted. Cute.

I've often said that I care not what the cost of a restaurant meal is providing it's a good value. I think the Grand Cafe is a not a poor value but a bad one. As I write, she's downstairs making a sandwich of eggs and last night's left over pot roast. Ah'm hongry!

The non-union employees did a very good job. A black-vested one took our order and brought the check. A white-jacketed with lapel one brought us the food. Although she had not taken our order, she served us correctly. A white-jacketd without lapel one bussed our dishes without asking whether we were finished, the correct thing to do as our flatware indicated we wer.
For the delicious food, I'd like to return but I refuse to be so badly ript off a second time. Even if it were a union shop, I'd still not return.
