The dining room is 1000' above the ocean. I've had some of the best dinners of my life their. Dress is casual/nice. The inn, by the way, is one of the most peaceful/upscale/romantic places that I've ever been also. It's also very expensive ($350-$500 per night). An aniversary type of place.

Good Places to Eat In/Near Big Sur?

I really like Deetjens, the former chef from Ventana is there, and the food is excelent. You do need a reservation. (It's also a nice place to stay.)
Glen Oaks, a small restaurant a few miles north of Ventana at the south end of Big Sur village, has excellent California-cuisine type food. When I lived in Carmel we often made the drive down just for dinner. The owners also operate a motel.

Actually, I think Glen Oaks was voted by the Big Sur residents as the best overall place to eat. I enjoyed the specials there, especially after a long hike. You reserve a place by signing a clipboard hanging on the door with the time you want and the number of people in your party. As noted above, Glen Oaks is across Highway 1 from a motel of the same name. There is a Chevron sign and gas pumps adjacent to the Ripplewood Resort.
