Hi Will, I always loved to go to Luis's when I lived in Sacramento. It's downtown somewhere (brain fart), and has been there forever. The rice is scooped on to the platos with an ice cream scoop, iirc, but it's still good. I always got the chicken enchilada plato. The margaritas are potent. Great guacamole. House-made tortillas. It's a busy, popular place at lunchtime with the downtown business people. Luis has pictures on the wall of the Governor and himself, and goofy stuff like that. There's the little nickel jukeboxes on each table. It's sort of a dumpy little dive-y place. Parking in the back in a dirt lot. It's been years since I've been there, so this info may not be up-to-date. I hope it hasn't been spruced-up to death.

Also, the folks on sac.general are pretty helpful -- you may want to try posting there.

I think it's around Alhambra and L Street, but I've never been there. I have friends in Midtown, when I go there I try to go to Jimboy's. This is a taqueria chain, there is one on 29th between N and O. Heavy on the grease, but it has that authentic feel. I'm sure the tortillas are home-made.

I like taquerias and small, family run places that still cater to Mexicans. In this vein I recommend Tepatitlan down on Franklin Blvd. near the Campbell soup plant (how Sacramento can you get!) for tacos al carbon and asada dishes. El Michoacano runs 2 or 3 good taquerias. I've been to the one near Franklin and Fruitridge and the one near Power Inn and Fruitridge. They do good tortas, as well as tacos, with a good selection of fillings ranging from asado and al pastor to cabeza and lingua. It's very close to El Caballo Blanco which may still have a good post-midnight menudo crowd on weekends. I hear the 524 club on 12th in Alkali Flats is still pretty good. I also think Jody's in Woodland is holding up pretty well.

Good luck- D.M.
