Try AY Carumba in San Mateo on Palm near El Camino and #92. My favorite in the area.

Try Taqueria Pancho Villa on 300 block of B Stret between 3rd and 4th in San Mateo. This is the sparkling new restaurant of the very popular and successful Pancho Villa group from the Mission district in SF. Super good and super authentic food and full juice bar in rear.

La Bamba, La Costena and Los Altos are all on the corner of Old Middlefield and Rengstorff.

I like La Costena for its diversity (you can add cilantro, avocado, tomato, this and that for a quarter or so; they have several different size of burritos, etc. I like to get the chica ones, they're the smallest.) I like La Bamba for the quality (the burritos are the best around, but huge! I share with a coworker...) and I like the El Salvadorean menu items. I like Los Altos for the vegetarian tacos, tortes and tostado bowls (plus the guys there are *super-nice* and friendly). =

La Costena's sister store, Burrito Real at Rengstorff and Middlefield (by Lucky), has outdoor seating, which is nice this time of year.

Both La Costena and Burrito Real are giving away FREE food during noon and 1 p.m. on Cinco de Mayo. It will be an absolute party gras with mariachis, vendors, dancers, etc. (Note: the time has been shortened this year to one hour. If you want the free food, I suggest arriving early... like cuatro de mayo!) Anyway, on cinco de mayo you'll find me at Fiesta del Mar for the boink.

Also, I chatted with the owner (sister of FdM) of La Fiesta on Villa and she said LF is selling shot for 10=A2 on cinco de mayo. FdM and FdM2 will=

do something special like that, too, for their customers.

Quite a quandry... this cinco de mayo, huh?

If you're looking for good Mexican food in San Mateo, on B Street between 2nd and 3rd: La Michacoan. Best corn tortillas and chile colorado I've had. It's a restaurant not a taqueria.

La costena is the absolute best But in the last couple years there prices have gotten steep.(but still worth it!) I know burritto real is the sister store (and much better than the jack in the box it replaced i'm sure) but I havn't been yet.

I'll agree that La Bamba is the best around. The good flavors are unmatched. One thing, though. . .

The burritos are definitely for sharing (they're huge!), although I have been known to eat a whole one and regretted it all day.

I think they should offer different sizes like La Costena.
