Try woody's in the south central part of town. They have a great reputation but it can be a bitch to get there depending on where you live. Los Angeles, CA
Good barbecue in Los Angeles?
Go to South Central, along Hoover or Manchester for ribs. There were a couple q places in the valley, one on Ventura in Woodland Hills area I think. Brisket wasn't big as I recall, but I haven't lived in LA for seven years so my info is from memory. Used to stop by q joints after Raiders games, man those were good ribs. Given a choice between black q or yuppie q in L.A. I would take black q anyday. By that I mean Santa Monica and other upscale white areas never had real q. They probably don't now. One place comes to mind...Slauson just above La Cienega in a strip mall on the south side of the street. If you hit prairie(I think) you went too far, great q there. -Cuchulain - who lives in San Antonio and can get brisket anywhere Someone wrote: >I have recently moved to the Los Angeles area, and am searching in vain for >good barbecue, particularly brisket. There is also a chain that started in San Antonio that does brisket but I can't remember their name. They were all over town. I went to one in Hawthorne right on the main street. There was also Texas Nellie's Chili Bordello that had good brisket and a chain of small joints called Armadillo Willie's which did brisket ( They had a large smoker in the back in full view )

Dr Hoggly Woggly's Tyler Texas BBQ in the valley is quite good. Huge portions! Rick Royce on Pico has a good reputation, but it's next door to one of my fave Mex restaurants (Serenata Gourmet...don't miss!), so I do not have first hand experience. Another great place, though not Q, is Brent's Deli in Northridge, also the valley. Well worth the drive as it is the LA area's best! They have killer brisket, albeit not smoked. The brisket ortega melt and black pastrami reuben are to die for. Everything on the menu kicks ass except the potato skins. First of all the bunch of you bashing the city that I love is mind boggling. But you all forgot about RJ's good brisket cooked 12 hours or more over an oak fire. Also find the Biker joints there is always Q at these on the weekends bikers live for Q. Ask for the Rock Store on Mulholland you might even meet Jay Leno he hangs there on Sundays. or If you are closer to OC try Cooks Corner. I agree with the south central soul food idea there will be some of the best you may eat. this city has a lot of things going for it don't let the rest of the no nothings around here get to you. if you can't find it in LA it shouldn't be.
Anyone in So Calif interested in Q should check out the SCBBQA (So Calif BBQ Assoc), which hosts both KCBS (Kansas City BBQ Society) sanctioned competitions as well as non-competitive festivals (there's on coming up Nov 5 & 6 in San Dimas). We're talking here about real Q. Long and low over real wood and coals. We're not talking about taking some poor quality ribs, steam (or boil) them so they're "tender" and "moist", then drown them in sweet ketchup for a little "flavor". If you don't know the difference, then visit the upcoming QFest in San Dimas -- dozens of national and state champions will prepare a huge QFeast, demonstrate techniques, and have a good time. (Note that all SCBBQA affairs are Family Friendly.) Our members know all the real Q places in So Calif. (And yes, So Calif has many great commercial Q joints.) So ask us where you're willing to go (Valley, So Central LA, OC, wherever), what you're looking for (ribs, brisket, etc.), and whether you want to eat in or to-go -- we'll hook you up. (There's a catch: after you eat there, you have to give us your feedback.) For more info, start with a visit to the SCBBQA website at www.scbbqa.com Joe

They had to get special environmental approval to have the smoker. I am planning on trying it this weekend & will report back. Cheers!
