Great bistro style with excellent food. A locals favorite. Fandango - downtown Pacific Grove. Mediterranean ambience. Upbeat, great food. Always bustling. Peppers - downtown Pacific Grove. Mexican with a California flair. Excellent food, lots of interesting choices (not just standard Mexican fair), quite a few fish based things. Montrio - downtown Monterey. We haven't been recently but it has in the past had a reputation for excellence. Sort of "current cuisine". In an old firehouse so kind of interesting ambience. Sardine Factory - Cannery Row. Long-time, well-known restaurant. They do a surprising job of catering to just about any taste, from locals celebrating something to tourists (even in shorts) to locals out for a great meal. Restaurants on the Wharf - downtown Monterey. Now you're definitely into tourist territory, but the competition is fierce so the quality tends to be high. Domenico's is up-scale, excellent food. We had a very nice fish dinner at Cafe Fina recently. The Old Bath House - on the coast near downtown Pacific Grove. Fantastic views, great ambience. At the more elegant end, more expensive. We've always enjoyed our meals, too ... but the overall package is the draw. Le Coq d'Or - downtown Carmel. Small place with "mama" in the front and "daughter" cooking. French and German food and both seem to be excellent. My husband always orders the ris de veau and I've tried several other dishes. Nice and comfortable. Bricks - downtown Carmel. Tried this for the first time last night. Clubby atmosphere, excellent steaks ... done with various sauces instead of just plain grilled. Bread to die for. La Boheme - downtown Carmel. Haven't eaten here yet but it sounds wonderful. French. Fixed menu which they publish in advance. They have a Web site where they post the menu in advance (laboheme.com). Small, romantic-looking. We've heard great things so this is one of the places on our list of places to try. The Monterey area probably has more restaurants per capita than anywhere else ... and the quality is generally very high because there's a lot of competition and a relatively sophisticated tourist base. I could go on and on! Have fun when you visit!

A great steak house with steaks that melt in your mouth is Tahoe Joes or right across the street is the Outback, another steak house. Of course, we have the Spaghetti Factory too, which is a nice place to go without spending a lot. A great place for breakfast is a little rest. in Clovis called the Little Red Caboose. Does not look like much from the outside, but is very good with more than enough to eat. I could not finish my plate. While in Monterey, how about Bubba Gumps ? Another nice place on the wharf overlooking the boats is Gilberts. I had shrimp scampi that was very good. Another good place is Monterey Joes.

I could not finish my plate. Surely there still some great Armenian and Basque restaurants left in Fresno. Unfortunately, all the ones I used to go to have closed. > While in Monterey, how about Bubba Gumps ? Another nice place on the > wharf overlooking the boats is Gilberts. My favorite places in Monterey/Carmel are: La Boheme (Carmel near 7th + Dolores, Belgium, one dish per night), Fandago (Pacific Grove, Continental), The Fishwife (Asilomar, Seafood), El Cocodrillo (Pacific Grove, Latin American Seafood, sister restaurant to The Fishwife). I've never been too impressed with anyplace around either the Wharf or Cannery Row. Haven't been to any of the top-notch restaurants in Carmel, like Fresh Cream, though. Mike
