We went about two months ago after the Menlo Park Wine and Food thingie (which, btw, was a waste). In general, I would agree.

We showed up in shorts and they couldn't care less. That was very nice, and to be honest we were kind of shocked that they were so open about it. Bread was really wonderful, actually -- not always something you find even at higher end places.

We all felt the food was very good. If I had to quibble it would be that there was a rather heavy hand with raw spicing/herbs and not long enough cooked veggies. For my main course, which was completely vegitarian, this ment a bit too much of a "bitter/raw" edge to a dish that would have been better with a more "warm/longer" noted flavor.

Our experience was slightly higher than this with aps and wine and desert (I can't recall an exact amount). Still, we also thought it was a good value.

We were there about a year ago, once, and despite the constant raves in ba.food, we shan't be back. Not that it was bad, mind you, we just didn't feel it was worth the money with so many other good restaurants in the area. In fact, the experience was so forgettable that we can't even remember for sure when we went.

Went a couple of weeks ago for the first time. The food was good, but nothing that couldn't be done at home. As my friend expressed so well....it was good because it was made with good ingredients, not because the cook did anything to it.

We had the tomato bruschetta which really wasn't bruschetta but one slice of toast and a whole plateful of wonderful, fresh ripe sliced tomatoes.

I had the salmon and mashed potatoes. It was salmon and mashed potatoes.

He had the filet of beef. It was a really good filet of beef.

My son had the seafood tostadas. They were tiny bite sized tostadas. He liked them. They were like we made at home only on little chips instead of big corn tortillas.

We skipped dessert because we were going home for birthday cake but what the couple at the next table ordered looked good.

If you cook a little you could make it at home. I like to go out and eat things I wouldn't necessarily make for myself.

I think Masa's is a particularly good restaurant, as good as Fleur de Lis and a little below The French Laundry, in Yountville, for haut (French) cuisine. Whether I think it is a "good value" however, is a difficult question and is affected as much by my own mood at the time as by other factors. Also, I think it could be a good value for someone who has no trouble parting with $125 and a poor one to those to whom it would be infinately more difficult. "Good value" is only one of the subjective elements by which one should consider recommending a restaurant.

One of the ways I judge a restaurant's value for me is if it makes things far better than I can at home. Masa's generally falls in this category. If a restauarnt is good then it is good and, by extension, it will be a "good value" for someone, even if it's not one's self.
