The best fish tacos I know of in the (hyperextended) bay area are
at Viva Mexico Tropical in Sebastopol. They also have killer shrimp tacos. These are made with medium shrimp, not the little pre-cooked "cocktail" shrimp. Neither the fish nor the shrimp are overcooked. Both are cooked to order, not done ahead & tired-tasting.
What's great about both of these kinds of tacos is the dynamite
red paste in which the seafood is slathered after it is grilled or sauteed (not sure which; I think it's grilled). This is probably a mixture of achiote and some good dried red chiles, and other spices. It's not all that picante, just savory and colorful. In any case, what you get for only around $1.60 each is a double corn tortilla (fresh, nice and steamy), packed with a generous portion of seafood and the red paste, and some tasty pico de gallo. No flour, no grease, and above all *no mayonnaise*! Alongside is a small salad of mesclun, dressed with the excellent tomatillo/guacamole sauce, just one hot item from the salsa bar, and of course a lime wedge. You can wash this down with a tasty homemade jugo natural such as jamaica or tamarindo, or some homemade horchata, or a beer; or help yourself to icewater. My only complaint is that the management insists on calling the fish, which is fresh local rockfish, "red snapper," which it most definitely is not.
