Spettro, near the lake in Oakland, is a one-of-a-kind place, very friendly, good food, reasonable prices. Very popular. Short hop off the freeway. http://sanfrancisco.sidewalk.com/directory?FID=1&SID=738&FTS=spettro&x=10&y=12 http://www.sfgate.com/eguide/food/digest/spettro0903_97.shtml Linda E. wrote: > > Any suggestions for restaurants along the 580 corridor or near the Oakland > Colliseum? Good food but not too expensive and less than a mile west of the Coliseum. --WebTV-Mail-319953230-30844 Content-Description: signature Content-Type: TEXT/HTML; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT <html> <img src= "http://www.halcyon.com/knopf/history.gif"> The Oldtimer (Not Quite Off My Rocker Yet!) <html> --WebTV-Mail-319953230-30844--

Another spot I like is Cuckoo's Nest, at approximately 3rd and Alice not far from Jack London Square. Vaguely Italianate-Yuppie, owned by Paul Carerra. Things like polenta, bresola sandwiches, trout salad may appear on their menu, but it changes frequently so calling to ask is a good idea. Steve

The food was quite delicious, service friendly, prices reasonable. We shared a giant ravioli stuffed with lemony ricotta and topped with a generous saute of assorted wild mushrooms and a bit of shaved parmesan. It was indeed giant -- kept 3 of us happy as a starter (2 if you're more greedy than we were). For dinner, I had a pan-crisped salmon that was perfectly cooked (crispy outside, moist inside), served over a smashed red potato cake with some perfectly plain steamed vegies on the side. For dessert, we shared a pear-blueberry cobbler that was unremarkable. Wine list is pretty good and kinda cute -- lots of moon references. Several choices by the glass. It's has a nice friendly, informal, neighborhood kind of atmosphere. They also serve breakfast and lunch. I tried back for the former the following day, but they were doing a minor kitchen repair. Should be open again now, though.
