Nan King always gets the popular vote,
and is worth it, i think

Yuet Lee, especially for seafood.

Lucky Creation for vegetarian.

In Chinatown, Yuet Lee on the corner of Broadway and Stockton and Hing Lung near theatre. Not expensive, but not super cheap either. Ingredients are superior to most in Chinatown. Clean? As clean as it can get in Chinatown. We ain't talking tablecloths and stuff, but there's lots worse.

IMHO, I dislike House of Nanking. The food is not worth the wait. I hear interesting things about Brandy Ho's but have yet to dine there.

The R&G Lounge is recommended fairly often (especially by Chinese). I've enjoyed a meal there once (in the downstairs room). The upstairs is supposed to be nicer; I don't know if the menu is different or just the environment.

I've been partial to Imperial Palace on Grant. Most people are skeptical of this place, but when I bring people there, they tend to like it. The decor is a bit warn, but the food seems interesting and fresh.

My experience has been that the better Chinese places are not in Chinatown (especially if clean and not cheap are significant criteria).

If you're so inclined, non-Chinatown Chinese restaurants I'd suggest would include Wu Kong (Shanghainese, Dim Sum during the day, Rincon Center), Ton Kiang (Richmond, Hakka, Cantonese Dim Sum - there are two of them), Fountain Court (Shanghainese), Harbor Village (Hong Kong / Cantonese, Dim Sum during the day, Embarcadero Center), Taiwan (Taiwanese, obviously, Richmond), Beetelnut (Singaporean / Pan Asian, Cow Hollow). Almost any random place you choose on the heavily Chinese populated Clement street in the Richmond or Irving street in the inner Sunset will beat all but a few of the places in Chinatown.
