I like 'Tokyo Subway' at the corner of El Camino and Santa Cruz Avenue (Menlo, I guess) for cheap, authentic Japanese counter food. Sort of a mom & pop place, daily specials, open only at lunch.

I don't know if this has been mentioned already, but Andale Taqueria on University near Emerson is great and under $5 per person. The San Jose Mercury gave it 4 stars. I love the lowfat burrito and my boyfriend loves the chicken tacos.
