Each of two glassses of Saint Clement Sauvignon were spoiled by a moldy cork, and a filet ordered medium rare arrived well done. For excellent food, I'd suggest Fresh Cream in Monterey. Bill

They have a restaurant and an outdoor cafe (where I had a sandwich). The weather and view are beautiful. (Food not bad either, but a little expensive.) BTW, Nepenthe was the honeymoon house for Rita Hayworth and Orson Wells (at least that's what our tour book said). Dave Jerome [email removed]

It was last time I was down Highway 1. Nepenthe is fairly south of Carmel -- more like Big Sur. Personally, I've never been over enthusiastic about the food. spl

We have three favorite restaurants in the Big Sur/Carmel/Monterey area. In Big Sur, it's Ventana for lunch on their terrace overlooking the ocean. Absolutley breathtaking food and view. It's near Nepenthe, a little further north on the eastern side of the road. In Carmel, it's the Highlands Inn. We stayed there too on an Entertainment 1/2 price deal. It was incredible. We made reservations for early dinner at 6:00 and were the first couple seated at what the hostess said was their best table, #4 in the corner facing the ocean on two sides. We stayed through sunset and moonrise. It was the most beautiful setting ever. Food was very expensive, but wonderful. My husband thought it was the best meal he had ever eaten. I thought it was close. Great wine cellar too and lots of wine by the glass. In Monterey, the restaurant at the Monterey Bay Aquarium can't be beat for lunch overlooking the Bay and the sea otters etal. It is excellent food. Don't make the mistake of eating in the cafeteria part. There is an actual restaurant in the back. We are members and had dinner there on their member's night too. That was a bargain $14.95 for the entire meal. Back on Big Sur. The Post Ranch, easily the fanciest place on the Coast has tours every day around 12 or 12 30. Its across the street from Ventana. We have it on the list for next trip. Hope you enjoy that beautiful area. [email removed]
