Tra Vigne up in Napa Valley is a delight. Be sure to sit outside in the garden. The food is very good, the wine excellent, and the atmosphere wonderful. In Carmel, Clint Eastwood's place--unappealingly called the Hog's Breath--is pleasant for drinks. They serve great h'ors d'oeuvres; if you're not careful, you can fill up on them and spoil your dinner. The dinners there are no big deal, steaks and burgers, but a drink on the back patio is worth it just for the atmosphere. It's quite lovely, with a fireplace and heaters to stave off the often foggy and chilly Carmel air. Il Palio in SF is a good Italian restaurant. ************************************ Your ad here

A friend of mine who knows a little about good food and wine just had lunch at Tra Vigne. I haven't been to the Hog's Breath is quite some time, but I liked the place, especially that patio. Really nice place for drinks. Also, if you are female make sure to check out the graffiti in the ladies room. All sorts of stuff about Clint (I am assuming it's still there). And, if you are really lucky, Clint will be there when you stop in. I've heard that once in a blue moon he's been known to wait on tables if they are short- handed. Personally I think the chance of seeing Clint is enough to get me to go there!

Regarding Monterey, stay away from the Cannery Row area (strictly for the turista) and most of Fisherman's Wharf. The only exception there is Domenico's, which is sort of uppity Continental. Good seafood there but you're going to drop a fair number of bucks. I've spent upwards to $150 for two (back before I was toiling the vineyards of academia). spl
per Brian Allison's request Food in Napa: In general, I've never had a bad meal. The restaurants are quaint and the food is good! So, explore. But remember to get reservations, these places fill quickly during the warm part of the year. Doige's (I think it's spelled that way) Good breakfast food. Sometimes the service isn't great, but it's a cute little diner. Terra Beutiful old building. Creative and good food. Excellent wine selection. North, near Calistoga. Auberge de Soleil Nicest place in the valley. It's part of a club. Very French, Very Expensive. The view is worth it, the food however is not (but I'm not a huge French food fanatic). After having dinner there once, we now simply go for a glass of port after we eat, and enjoy the view over the valley - incredible! Meadowood Meadowood is a country club. They have golf, tennis and croquet. I've eaten in their restaurant for lunch. It was medium priced and you get the wonderful view of the golf course rising up into the woods. I really enjoy this place! Mustard's Grill Good food. Cute place. Big selection. Oakville Grocery (or is it Country Store?) If you are going to cook for yourselves or want to picnic, stop by the Oakville store. It is in Oakville on the East side of the street, it's made of brick and has a beautifully painted Coca-Cola ad on the South wall. This place is cute. They have a large gourmet food selection, confections, wines etc. Most likely the largest selection of unique food items in the wine country area. Enjoy! Vickie McCorkendale
