run, don't walk, to the big kitchen, at 30th and grape. owner judy the beauty on duty and her eclectic staff have graced the golden hill area of san diego for 15 years (a new stained glass front window commemorates the milestone). a previous poster here aptly described the big kitchen: you'll think you're in berkeley (or at least the 60s). decor is funky--lots of snapshots, drawings and murals by the staff and others, diner-tables in one room, and a big peninsular counter-bar in the other. also a new palm-shaded patio in the back, where one is greeted by a poster of whoopi goldberg, who used to work here. the breakfasts, for which we returned 3 times in 4 days, are indeed big, and delicious--try the down-home egg scrambles (i had spinach and cheese twice--yum!), with fresh juices, and kona coffee. for carnivores and vegetarians alike. judy herself circulates cheerily, coffeepot in hand--she's a very warm, welcoming host who thinks that her place should feed the soul as well as the body. and it does, wonderfully (read the front page of the menu). the big kitchen serves lunch too--but we never got that far! try it. you'll be glad you did. jane ([email removed])
