I ate at Bistro Clovis for the first time last week, and had a really excellent meal. For the first course I had a mousse of smoked fish, which was delicious if a bit lighter than I expected. My friend had vol au vent with escargot, which I didn't get to taste because he hoovered it in too quickly so he wouldn't have to share it. For the main course, my friend had the lapin a la moutarde, which was surprisingly tender with an extraordinary sauce. I had duck in a peppercorn sauce, which was also fabu. Dessert (tarte tatin, which takes quite a while for the to prepare; if you're in a hurry order it when your main courses arrive) was excellent. Good wine choices, but a small list. Ilona

Bistro Clovis is reasonably good, but nowhere near excellent. Pretty traditional bistro fare, acceptably prepared but not very inventive. Decor is appropriate but not memorable, service can be a bit distracted. Over the years I've had some dishes that were excellent but many others that didn't rise above the ordinary. If I wanted to eat in that neighborhood, I would consider Clovis, but I wouldn't exclude other options. After all, Zuni isn't that far away. An interesting little restaurant if you like German food, which my partner does not, so I haven't eaten there in a few years. Happy holiday dining, all. Beware of the fruitcake. Mark Alan Miller
