This is not exactly on your route--but not that out of the way, considering the distance you would have already traveled--just north of San Francisco, in Tiburon, is Guayama's, which I think would fit the bill perfectly. It is large, very popular, I would say gourmet and right on the water with gorgeous views--and Tiburon is certainly a fun spot to visit.

This is not 'gourmet', but for authentic Mexian food I always liked Juan's in W. Berekely (on 6th St I think, right across the street from Fantasy Records) ... it was one of the few places in the Bay Area I ever found Nopales on the menu! Food was very authentic IMO, and the atmosphere was very down-to-earth (as is most of W. Berkeley!).

There's some authentic places in Salinas as well, not too far out of the way if you're going to Big Sur! I think the place I used to go was called Rosita's ... it was right next to the train (or was it the bus?) station right downtown Salinas.
